The Terrier

If you want to talk about the Yorkshire we must talk previously about the Terriers, their meaning and curiousities about their origins, sometimes quite far from the idea we have nowadays about their use, even with the evolutions they have experimented, without all the cares and attention they recieve, they still remind us to the first terriers.

Origin of the Terriers probably are in roman dogs, used for the badger hunt because with their small size they were clever and they could enter into the sets under the ground, and that's why they were called Terriers, from the latin word "terra" that means ground.

It is said that in their origins they were called Agassin, and they might be the core of the Terrar breed, and they had a very different appearance compared with the terriers now, because they were usefulness hunters.

Almost all the Terriers have their origins in the United Kingdom, when the romans invaded the islands five hundred years b.c. and althought they knew there were Terriers in other places, it was there the place where they evolved and set up differents breeds, most of them with English origin.

In the past, just as the greyhounds were the aristocratic dogs and the spaniels the nobility ones, the terriers belong to the countryman and workers, the most unprivileged people.

So that's why the Terriers are still a brave group of dogs, tenacious and combative, with strong character, clever and loving and sometimes independent. Althought they are small they're not aware of their size.

Not only our terrier breed need to get ready to look good, almost all the terrier breeds need this to have that particular aspect, cause without it they wouldn't look like that, so it's not only an aesthetic issue.

We could talk here about tail amputations, though their initial point wasn't the aesthetic as it's normal to think. The amputation was made to help the dog's moving inside the burrows, even sometimes the size they let the tails were perfect to grab the dog by them and pull them outside the burrows.

With the evolution of the different breeds, we should classify the terrier (group III) in four sections:
  • Big and medium size terriers
  • Small size terriers
  • Bull terriers
  • Company terriers (which is the place of our protagonist)
Article in memory of those first terrier lovers, for the legacy they left and all who love these breeds, Yorkshire in special.
